Why we wrote this

The sharpest complaints in fourteen years of reviews of this property are all versions of the same sentence: not what I expected. Not the rooms being bad. Not the beach disappointing. The gap between a photograph and a Tuesday afternoon.

So the useful thing we can do is close that gap here, in advance, rather than at check-in. What follows is the accurate version of the Yacht Club. Every good line is a guest's, verbatim, with the date attached. The concessions are ours.

What you are actually booking

Crystal Bay Yacht Club is 43 bungalows and villas across roughly fourteen thousand square metres of mature tropical garden at one end of Silver Beach — a 250-metre cove between Lamai and Chaweng, closed at both ends by granite boulders. There is a pool. There is a restaurant on the sand. Reception is staffed around the clock.

It is not a five-star hotel and it does not behave like one. There is no marble, no lobby pianist, no spa in the clinical sense — the massage happens in a hut on the beach, which is the charm and not a shortcoming. Guests get to the point faster than we do:

Both of those are five-star reviews of a hotel that is not one. That distinction is more or less the whole business.

The good, and who said so

  • The villas are large. "Spacious" is the single word guests reach for most often about these rooms, across fourteen years. "Absolutely loved our stay! The staff are fantastic, lovely beach and the rooms are spacious." — Agoda review of the Yacht Club, November 2024. The guest went on to write "Feels like luxury!" — her word, not ours.
  • The bay is the best-rated on the island, and it is not close. "Love it here. The most beautiful beach on the island." — Agoda review of the Yacht Club, October 2022.
  • The space is the product. Fourteen thousand square metres for 43 villas means paths rather than corridors and trees between you and everyone else. It is why couples book here and why families with older children do.
  • Snorkelling starts at the sand. The boulders at both ends hold the fish; you do not need a boat. "if you go out a bit there is a lot of area with sand and the water was crystal clear. Take some goggles and you will see plenty of fish around the rocks." — Agoda guest, June 2024.
  • The food covers more range than a beach hotel needs to. "excellent restaurant, thai food but also incredible European if you are getting tired of asian food . Drinks are excellent as well ." — Agoda review of the Yacht Club, July 2025. Order the mango salad with crispy calamari and the tom yum seafood soup; both were recommended by name by a guest who stayed a month.
  • The fire show, Tuesday and Friday, 7:30 pm, on the sand at the Beach Club. "The best fire show I've ever seen; they are excellent. I highly recommend it, especially with a cocktail. The setting is magical." — Google review of the Beach Club, July 2025.
  • People stay longer than they booked. Which is the only quality metric we really trust. "My daughter and I stayed here for a week, and ended up staying here for a month!" — Agoda review of the Yacht Club, February 2022.

The worn edges

Here is the part most hotel websites leave out, written the way our own guests write it — the concession and the verdict in the same breath.

"Incredible beach , massage on both sides of the beach , excellent restaurant… The rooms/ bungalow are super spacious… the premises are a little run down but who cares"

That is the most accurate sentence anyone has written about this property, and both halves of it are load-bearing.

  • The fabric shows its age. The buildings are not new and the gardens are mature, which is a polite way of saying that things grow over things and paint does not last long in salt air. Guests who need everything crisp and recent are the guests who leave disappointed. We would rather tell you now.
  • Housekeeping and upkeep are not uniformly perfect. Walkways, loungers and the odd tired fitting are the recurring notes in our lower-scoring reviews, and they are fair. If something in your villa is not right, tell reception on day one rather than in a review on day seven — it gets fixed faster that way, and it is the single most useful thing a guest can do.
  • The beach is public and busy midday. "Lots of day trippers come to this beach but it's still gorgeous" — Agoda review of the Yacht Club, December 2025; "the beach gets pretty busy with day tripper traffic." — Agoda review of the Yacht Club, February 2025. Anyone who has stayed a week here swims at seven and at four, and uses the pool in between.
  • There are rocks. "The beach has a large number of rocks... not great for swimming" — Agoda guest, May 2026. True at the ends of the cove. The sandy middle is where you swim; water shoes fix the rest, and the rocks are where the snorkelling is.
  • The restaurants are priced for a spot on the sand. "Small beach and pricey restaurants, it's a captured market." — Agoda review of the Yacht Club, February 2025. The value here is the position, not the bill. There are good, cheaper Thai kitchens a few minutes up the road, and we are not offended if you use them.
  • The access lane is narrow. "Access to the hotel is through an narrow mud road is only thing we could think as negative. Everything else was great." — Agoda review of the Yacht Club, August 2025. Slow on a scooter, slower after rain.
  • Some rooms hear the road. "avoid rooms along the main road as it's noisy" — Agoda guest, January 2025. Tell us quiet matters when you book and we will place you accordingly. See the villas and bungalows page for which sits where.
  • Paths and a slope. Fourteen thousand square metres of garden means walking, some of it uphill. Wonderful for the space it buys; worth knowing if stairs and inclines are a problem.
  • Quiet after dark. Deliberately. Chaweng is fifteen minutes away when you want noise.

The stays this place is built for

A pattern worth naming: a large share of the highest-scoring reviews of this property have a date attached to the trip.

"This place is one of Thailands gems. The views were something out of heaven, the pool was great, the accommodation was spotless and comfy. A nice soft matress and a warm welcome for our 30th wedding anniversary was well received."

Milestones do well here for an unglamorous reason: the thing being celebrated is the bay and the time, and neither is competing with the decor. Nobody spends a thirtieth anniversary admiring a lobby. They spend it on a terrace with a view down a cove, which is precisely what this property has to sell.

The same logic explains why the second-longest category of stay here is the open-ended one. A guest who came for a beach villa put the value question to bed in one line:

Who will love it

  • Couples who want space and quiet more than they want a resort programme.
  • Long-stayers — a week minimum, and a fair number who extend. This is the property's natural guest.
  • Milestone trips — anniversaries, retirements, the birthdays with a zero in them.
  • Snorkellers and early swimmers, who get a bay to themselves before eight.
  • Repeat Samui visitors who have done Chaweng and would like to stop doing Chaweng.

Who should book elsewhere

  • Anyone who needs new. If a worn fitting will spoil your week, the big-name resorts are twenty minutes away and they are good at what they do.
  • Party travellers. This bay winds down early and we like it that way.
  • Guests wanting the sea thirty steps from the bed. That is our sister property, the Beach Resort, at the other end of the same sand — 25 rooms directly on the beach.
  • Anyone wanting miles of open sand or jet skis. The cove is 250 metres and sheltered; neither is on offer.

Before you book

Say what you need. Quiet side, ground level, a date on the trip, an early arrival — reception would far rather know in advance than read about it later. Frequently asked questions

Is Crystal Bay Yacht Club a five-star hotel?
No, and it does not try to be. It is a boutique property of 43 bungalows and villas in a large garden on the best-rated beach on Koh Samui. Guests who arrive expecting a polished five-star machine are the ones who leave disappointed; guests who come for the bay and the space tend to extend their stay.

Are the rooms dated?
In places, yes. The villas are large and comfortable, and some of the fabric shows its age — a guest's own summary was "the premises are a little run down but who cares" (Agoda, July 2025). If something is not right in your villa, tell reception on day one.

Is the beach private?
No. All Thai beaches are public, and this one is popular — it fills with day-trippers from late morning. Early mornings and late afternoons are the quiet version, and staying on the bay is how you get them.

Bungalow or villa?
