The beach guests keep calling the best on the island
Research Koh Samui beaches for an afternoon and one name keeps surfacing. Silver Beach — also called Crystal Bay, and Thong Takhian on a Thai map — is a 250-metre cove on the east coast, between Chaweng and Lamai. TripAdvisor reviewers rank it first on Koh Samui, year after year. We're not going to make the claim ourselves; we run two of the businesses on the sand. A guest put it plainer than we can:

What sets the cove apart isn't one thing. It's the stack: fine white sand, water clear enough to snorkel straight off the shore, granite boulders holding the fish at both ends, and a sheltered middle that suits families with small children.
It is not a secret, though. This is a public beach, and by late morning it is busy. We'd rather tell you that now than have you find out at 11 am. This guide is the version we'd give a friend: real prices, the good hours, and the parts that need a caveat.

Getting to Silver Beach
The cove sits in the Maret district, roughly halfway between Chaweng to the north and Lamai to the south. It's set back from the main ring road, so look for the Crystal Bay signs rather than trying to spot water from the highway.
From Samui airport
About 25 minutes south along Route 4169. We can send our driver: 600 baht per way, name sign at the last meeting point outside arrivals, paid to the driver directly — send your flight number when you book. From the taxi rank in arrivals, expect 600 to 800 THB. A Grab booked on arrival runs 400 to 600 THB depending on the hour.
From Chaweng
Roughly 8 kilometres south of central Chaweng. Grab or taxi, 10 to 15 minutes, 200 to 350 THB. On a scooter, follow the coastal road south past Chaweng Noi and watch for the Silver Beach or Crystal Bay signs on your left.
From Lamai
About 5 kilometres north. Eight to ten minutes. A Grab costs 150 to 250 THB.
By songthaew
The cheapest option is the songthaew — the red and yellow shared pickups that run the main road. Flag one heading the right way and say "Silver Beach" or "Thong Takhian." Around 50 to 100 THB per person. They stop on the main road, so you'll walk the last stretch down the access lane.

What the cove actually is
Koh Samui has dozens of beaches, and most are long open stretches lined with resorts. This one is small and closed at both ends, and that changes everything about it.
The shelter
Two headlands of granite boulders run into the sea at the northern and southern ends. The water inside stays calm even when other east-coast beaches turn choppy. One guest reached for a comparison we could never get away with in our own voice:

The sand and the water
The sand is finer and whiter than Chaweng or Lamai, and it stays clean — partly the compact size, partly the resort teams working it every morning. Water clarity is the standout: on a good day, visibility runs 10 to 15 metres, unusual for a beach you walk straight into.

The boulders
The boulders aren't only scenery. The underwater sections carry coral growth and shelter dozens of fish species. Walk the edges at low tide and you'll find tide pools with small crabs and urchins in them.
When to come — and what hour to come at
The cove works year round; its shelter protects it from the rough seas that spoil other Koh Samui beaches in certain months. What shifts through the year is the crowd and the price, not the water.
January to April
The dry months, and the most popular. Little rain, comfortable humidity, calm clear sea. February and March give the best mix of weather and reasonable rates. Days sit around 30 to 33 degrees with a breeze off the water.
May and June
The hottest — often 34 to 35 degrees by early afternoon — and the quietest beach of the year. Afternoon showers are common and usually pass within an hour. Visibility stays excellent.
July to October
Koh Samui sits in a drier weather zone than the Andaman coast during the Thai monsoon. Expect occasional rain in short bursts with plenty of sun between. The island turns green and room rates drop.
November and December
November is the wettest month and the cheapest. By mid-December conditions improve quickly as the dry season returns. Even in the wettest weeks the sheltered position helps.
The hour matters more than the month
Whichever month you pick, this is a public beach and it fills up. Come early or stay late for the quiet version.

Before 10:00 and after 15:00 are the calm, good-light hours. Between roughly 11:00 and 14:00 is the day-tripper window.
Snorkelling
Silver Beach is one of the few places on Koh Samui where snorkelling starts at the shoreline instead of a boat. The honest version comes from a guest who was looking at the same photos you are:

That's the whole trick. The rocks are the snorkelling.
Where to swim out
The prime areas are along the northern and southern boulder formations. The southern rocks hold the most diverse marine life, with coral extending several metres from the boulder bases. Swim to where the boulders meet the water and follow the rock line 2 to 3 metres out. Depth along the edges runs 1 to 4 metres.
What you'll see
The resident fish population is good for a mainland beach. Regular sightings: parrotfish in several colour variations, schools of damselfish, butterflyfish, wrasse, triggerfish, the occasional small moray eel. Clownfish sit in their anemones along the southern rocks. In the calmer months, March through September, small blacktip reef sharks sometimes cruise the outer edges of the cove.
Gear and timing
The Beach Club rents snorkel sets — mask, snorkel, fins — for around 200 THB a half day. Conditions are best from 8:00 to 11:00, before the breeze picks up. Wear reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard. Water shoes are worth packing: the rocks are sharp in places.
Eating on the beach
The main table on the sand is the Crystal Bay Beach Club, and it's open to everyone — walk in, take a table, order. The menu runs Thai and international with a lean towards fresh seafood. The seafood platter for two, at 2,200 THB, is the headline order. Individual mains run 200 to 600 THB for Thai dishes and 350 to 800 THB for Western. Cocktails are 250 to 400 THB, with happy-hour specials bringing selected drinks to 180 THB. Fresh coconuts, 80 THB. Smoothies, 120 to 150.

Both are fair. You're paying for a table on the sand, and the value here is the view, not the bill. If you want cheaper, the main road between Chaweng and Lamai is 5 to 10 minutes away and lined with Thai restaurants where you eat well for 100 to 250 THB a dish. The Beach Resort restaurant is the other option on the bay, and breakfast there is cooked to order rather than laid out on a tray.
No reservation needed for lunch. On fire-show nights — Tuesday and Friday — booking a dinner table is a good idea.
Where to stay on the sand
Two properties have direct access to the beach, both under the Crystal Bay name. That's part of why the cove stays as calm as it does after dark.
Crystal Bay Beach Resort
Twenty-five rooms, the smaller of the two, right on the sand — the closest rooms a few steps from the water. Superior rooms start from 2,750 THB per night, Seaview from 3,150 THB, Beachfront Deluxe from 4,100 THB, and the Grand Seaview Suite from 4,750 THB. On value, a guest makes the case better than a price list can:

One caveat worth knowing before you pick a room: some rooms face the coastal road behind the property. "avoid rooms along the main road as it's noisy" is a real guest's advice (Agoda, January 2025), and it's good advice. Book the sea side if quiet matters. Check dates and rooms here.
Crystal Bay Yacht Club
The larger sister property — 43 bungalows across 14,000 square metres of garden. Garden villas from 2,050 THB per night. Pool villas from 6,100 THB, a private 33-square-metre bungalow with your own plunge pool. It has its own swimming pool, which suits guests who want to switch between beach and pool through the day. It's also where the long stays happen:

Things to do beyond the sun-lounger
Kayaking
Kayaks rent at the Beach Club — a single around 300 THB per hour, a double 500 THB. Paddling round the headlands on a calm day gets you to small coves you can't reach on foot.
Massage on the beach
There's a massage hut where the sand runs out. It is a hut, not a spa, and that's the charm.

The fire show
Tuesday and Friday evenings, 7:30 pm, on the sand at the Beach Club. Free to watch, for resort guests and walk-ins alike. It pulls people from other resorts across the island.
Day trips
The cove makes a good base for the rest of the island: the Big Buddha temple (30 minutes north), the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks at Lamai (10 minutes south), the Namuang Waterfalls (30 minutes inland), and boat trips to Ang Thong National Marine Park.

Practical notes
Swimming
The cove blocks strong currents and the sandy bottom slopes gently, with no sudden drop-offs. Near the boulders there are submerged rocks — wear water shoes if you're exploring the edges. Guests are blunt about this and they're right: "the beach here had a lotttt of rocks so have to be careful while swimming otherwise you might get badly hurt" (Agoda, October 2022). The sandy middle is where you swim.
Sun
Stronger than most visitors are used to at home. Apply generously, reapply after swimming, and use reef-safe sunscreen so the coral survives your holiday.
Cash and cards
The Crystal Bay properties and the Beach Club take major cards. Songthaews and smaller vendors want cash. The nearest ATMs are on the main road, about five minutes away.
What to bring for a day trip
Reef-safe sunscreen, a towel (or rent a lounger at 500 baht with one included), water shoes, your own mask if you have one, a waterproof phone case, cash and a card, and something light for the walk back up the access lane.
