Why we wrote this
Most hotels only show you the good bits. We'd rather tell you the whole thing before you book, because the guests who love Crystal Bay are the ones who knew what they were coming to. The sharpest reviews in our corpus all say a version of the same thing: not like the photos. That gap is the only thing that can go badly wrong here, and it's fixable in the writing rather than at the front desk.
So here it is. The beach guests keep calling the best on Koh Samui — and the rocks, the crowds, the narrow lane and the small stretch of sand that are just as real. Every good line below is a guest's, word for word, with the date on it. The honest bits are ours.
First, the names
One cove, three names. The Thai name is Thong Takhian. Booking platforms usually say Silver Beach. The properties on the sand — and most guests — say Crystal Bay. It's a single 250-metre cove between granite boulders on the east coast, between Lamai and Chaweng, and it holds the number-one beach ranking on TripAdvisor and a 9.0 location score on Booking.com. What's genuinely good
- The water is clear and calm. Sheltered inside the cove, it stays swimmable and snorkel-clear on most mornings — no boat trip needed to see fish around the rocks.

- The kitchen will cook around an allergy. What isn't
We'd rather you read this now than feel it at check-in.
- The beach is small — 250 metres, end to end. No long walks along the waterline. A guest's own words: "Crystal bay very small beach , but looks very clear water" — Agoda review of the Beach Resort, July 2024.
- There are rocks, and they are real. Lovely for snorkelling, sharp underfoot in places. "The only thing I didn't like was the rocks in the water. - It fills up by late morning. This is a beloved public beach, not a private one. Day-trippers arrive mid-morning from Chaweng and Lamai. - The access lane is narrow. - Some rooms face the road. "avoid rooms along the main road as it's noisy" — Agoda review of the Beach Resort, January 2025. That's fair advice and we'd give it ourselves. The coastal road runs behind the property; the sea-facing rooms don't hear it. If quiet matters, book the sea side.
- The restaurants are not cheap. You're paying for a table on the sand, and guests flag it: "Small beach and pricey restaurants, it's a captured market." — Agoda review of the Yacht Club, February 2025. There are cheaper options five minutes up on the main road if you want them.
- The fabric shows its age in places. We're a small boutique group, not a new build, and the honest reviews say so. Guests tend to forgive it; the ones who don't are usually the ones who expected otherwise.
- Little nightlife nearby. Quiet after dark, by design. Chaweng is about 15 minutes away if you want the noise.
Not a five-star resort — and guests reward the honesty

Who will love it here
- Families with young children — the water is shallow and calm through the sandy middle, and everything is on the sand rather than a shuttle ride away.
- Couples who want quiet — enough going on to eat and swim, quiet enough to feel like a retreat.
- Snorkellers — the boulders at both ends hold fish, no boat required.
- Repeat Samui visitors done with Chaweng — a smaller, calmer cove with the island's clearest water.
Who might prefer somewhere else
- Party people — Chaweng, not here. Crystal Bay winds down early.
- Anyone wanting miles of open sand — Maenam on the north coast runs five kilometres with a fraction of the crowds.
- Motorised water-sports fans — the sheltered cove isn't set up for jet skis or parasailing.
- Anyone who needs a new build — see above. Boutique and lived-in, not brand new.
Practical tips before you come

- Pack water shoes and reef-safe sunscreen. The rocks are sharp in spots, and the reef is worth protecting.
- Carry some cash. The resort restaurants take cards; a few smaller vendors nearby are cash-only.
- The Beach Club is open to everyone. You don't need to be a hotel guest — walk in, take a table, order. Sun-loungers are 500 baht a day with a towel. Mains start around 180 THB, and the value here is the view rather than the price.
- Don't miss the fire show. Tuesday and Friday, 7:30 pm, on the sand. Book a dinner table and stay for it.
- Ask us to send the driver. About 25 minutes from Samui airport, 600 baht per way, name sign at arrivals — all the routes are priced out here.
