Research beaches on Koh Samui for an hour and you'll hit the same confusion everyone hits. Crystal Bay, Silver Beach, Thong Takhian. You search one and photos of the others come back. You read reviews under one name and people mention the other two.
They are the same beach. One 250-metre cove on the east coast, between Lamai and Chaweng Noi, with granite boulders closing off both ends. Three names, laid down at three different times by three different sets of people. Here's where each one came from and which to use where.
Thong Takhian — the original
Haad Thong Takhian is the Thai name and the oldest one. "Haad" is beach; "thong takhian" translates roughly as "golden takhian trees." The takhian — Hopea odorata — is a tall tropical hardwood that grows along this shoreline and has done for generations, long before anyone put a sun-lounger on the sand.
Local Thai residents still use this name. It's what you'll see on official Thai maps and on the road signs near the turn-off. It's also the name to say to a songthaew driver if "Silver Beach" draws a blank.
Silver Beach — the travellers' name
Silver Beach is the English name that came in with international tourism. Nobody is quite sure who coined it, but it stuck on TripAdvisor, in guidebooks and across travel blogs. It most likely describes the way the fine white sand catches the light — the silvery cast it takes on early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
It's the name most foreign visitors know, and it's the one under which the cove holds its number-one ranking for beaches on Koh Samui on TripAdvisor.
Crystal Bay — the properties' name
Crystal Bay is the commercial name, carried by the businesses on the sand: Crystal Bay Beach Resort (25 rooms, right on the beach), Crystal Bay Yacht Club (43 bungalows and villas in the gardens above), and the Crystal Bay Beach Club (the beachfront restaurant and bar, open to anyone). The name was chosen for the clarity of the water inside the cove, and over the years it spread from the properties to the beach itself.

Why one beach ends up with three names
This is ordinary in Thailand. Plenty of beaches, temples and landmarks carry a Thai name plus one or more English names that arrived with tourism. What's slightly unusual here is that the commercial name grew big enough to compete with the translated one for search traffic.
The sequence is straightforward. The beach was Thong Takhian for centuries. English-speaking visitors began calling it Silver Beach as tourism arrived through the 1990s and early 2000s. The Crystal Bay properties were built, and their name became the third way to refer to the same sand. All three are in use today — Thai locals lean on Thong Takhian, review sites on Silver Beach, booking platforms on Crystal Bay.
Which name to type where
- Google Maps: "Silver Beach Koh Samui" or "Crystal Bay Samui." Both resolve correctly. Thong Takhian appears too, but is less reliably indexed on international map services.
- TripAdvisor: "Silver Beach." That's the name reviews and rankings sit under, and where the beach holds the island's number-one position.
- Booking.com: "Crystal Bay" — that's how the properties are listed. The location score on this platform is 9.0.
- Grab or Bolt: "Silver Beach" or "Crystal Bay." Most drivers on the island know both.
- Talking to locals or songthaew drivers: "Thong Takhian" first, "Silver Beach" second.
If you only want to remember one: "Silver Beach Koh Samui" gives the most consistent results across every platform.
What you'll find when you get there
Whichever name brought you, the cove is the same. Fine white sand, water that genuinely looks like the photographs, and boulder formations at both ends that keep the water calm and hold enough fish to make snorkelling worth doing straight off the beach.

Two things worth setting straight, because plenty of guides don't. First, it is small — 250 metres is a short walk, not a stretch you stroll for an hour. Second, it is popular and public, and it fills up. Day-trippers arrive through the late morning from Chaweng and Lamai, and by midday the sand is busy.

On the sand itself: the Beach Club serves anyone who walks in, and runs its fire show on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 7:30 pm. Sun-loungers are 500 baht a day with a towel.
How to get there
The cove is on the east coast in the Maret district. From Samui airport it's about 25 minutes by car — we can send our driver for 600 baht per way if you send us your flight number. From Chaweng, roughly 15 minutes. From central Lamai, 5 to 10.
