Silver Beach Koh Samui: The Complete 2026 Guide

Why Silver Beach Is the Best Beach on Koh Samui

Research Koh Samui beaches for an afternoon and one name keeps surfacing. Silver Beach, also called Crystal Bay and by its Thai name Thong Takhian, is the beach guests keep calling the best on the island. TripAdvisor reviewers rank it number one on Koh Samui, year after year. One guest put it plainer than we can: "great staff, great food, clean rooms, and the best beach I've ever seen" — Agoda guest, November 2024.

The three names trip up first-timers. Maps and international travel sites use Silver Beach. The resorts on the bay call it Crystal Bay, and so do most people in local hospitality. Thai speakers know it as Thong Takhian, the official geographic name. All three point to the same sheltered cove on the east coast, tucked between Chaweng and Lamai.

What sets it apart is not one thing but the stack: fine white sand, clear water, real snorkeling off the rocks, and a calm cove that suits families with small children. It is not a secret, though. This is a public beach, and by late morning it is busy. We would rather tell you that now than have you find out at 11 am.

This guide covers everything you need to plan a visit in 2026 — current prices, honest recommendations, and the practical detail we would give a friend.

Getting to Silver Beach

Silver Beach sits on the east coast in the Maret district, roughly halfway between Chaweng to the north and Lamai to the south. The address is 205 Moo 4, Maret, Koh Samui 84310. It is set back from the main road, so look for the Crystal Bay resort signs rather than trying to spot the water from the highway.

From Samui Airport

About 20 minutes south along Route 4169. A private sedan transfer costs around 800 THB and can be arranged through either resort in advance. Book on arrival instead and a Grab ride runs 400 to 600 THB, depending on the hour and demand.

From Chaweng

Roughly 8 kilometers south of central Chaweng. A Grab or taxi takes 10 to 15 minutes and costs 200 to 350 THB. On a motorbike, follow the coastal road south past Chaweng Noi and watch for the Silver Beach or Crystal Bay signs on your left.

From Lamai

About 5 kilometers north. The drive takes 8 to 10 minutes. A Grab ride costs 150 to 250 THB.

By Songthaew (Shared Taxi)

The cheapest option is the songthaew, the red or yellow shared pickups that run the main road. Flag one heading the right way and tell the driver Silver Beach or Crystal Bay. The fare is around 50 to 100 THB per person.

What Makes Crystal Bay Special

Koh Samui has dozens of beaches, and most are long open stretches exposed to the wind, lined with resorts competing for attention. Crystal Bay is a small cove, and that changes everything about it.

The Sheltered Cove

Two headlands of granite boulders run into the sea at the northern and southern ends, forming a natural cove. The water inside stays calm even when other east-coast beaches turn choppy. In peak season the bay reads like a giant natural swimming pool, clear enough to count fish from the sand. One guest reached for a comparison we could never get away with in our own voice: "The Seychelles rocks at the price of Thailand." — Agoda guest, October 2022.

The Sand

The sand is finer and whiter than Chaweng or Lamai, soft underfoot, and it stays clean — partly the compact size, partly the resort teams working it daily.

The Water

Water clarity is the standout. On a good day visibility runs 10 to 15 meters, unusual for a beach you walk straight into. The color shifts from emerald near shore to turquoise further out, set against white sand and grey granite.

The Boulders

The boulders are not just scenery. The underwater sections carry coral growth and shelter dozens of fish species. Walk the edges at low tide and you will find tide pools of small crabs, sea urchins, and marine life.

Best Time to Visit (Month by Month)

The cove works year round — its shelter protects it from the rough seas that spoil other Koh Samui beaches in certain months. What shifts through the year is the crowd and the price, not the water.

Dry Season: January Through April

The most popular months, and for good reason. Little rain, humidity at its most comfortable, calm clear sea. February and March give the best mix of good weather and reasonable prices. Daytime sits around 30 to 33 degrees Celsius with a breeze off the water.

Hot Season: May Through June

May and June bring the highest temperatures, often 34 to 35 degrees by early afternoon — but also the quietest beach. Afternoon showers are common and usually pass within an hour. Water visibility stays excellent.

Green Season: July Through October

Koh Samui sits in a drier weather zone than the Andaman coast during the Thai monsoon. July through October brings occasional rain, usually in short bursts, with plenty of sun between. The landscape turns green and room prices drop.

Wet Season: November and December

November is the wettest month. By mid-December conditions improve quickly as the dry season returns. Even in the wettest weeks the sheltered position helps. November prices are the lowest of the year.

A word on crowds

Whichever month you pick, the beach is public and it fills up. Come early or stay late for it at its quietest — "Beach does get busy during the day but early mornings and late afternoons is fairly quiet" — Agoda guest, June 2024.

Snorkeling Guide

Silver Beach is one of the best snorkeling spots you can reach without a boat on Koh Samui. But the honest version comes from a guest who was looking at the same photos you are: "From the photos there looks like a lot of rocks which there is but if you go out a bit there is a lot of area with sand and the water was crystal clear. Take some goggles and you will see plenty of fish around the rocks." — Agoda guest, June 2024. That is the whole trick — the rocks are the snorkeling.

Best Snorkeling Spots

The prime areas are along the northern and southern boulder formations. The southern rocks hold the most diverse marine life, with coral extending several meters from the boulder bases. Swim to where the boulders meet the water and follow the rock line at 2 to 3 meters out. Depth along the edges runs 1 to 4 meters.

What You Will See

The resident fish population is good for a mainland beach. Regular sightings: parrotfish in several color variations, schools of damselfish, butterflyfish, wrasse, triggerfish, the occasional small moray eel. Clownfish sit in their anemones along the southern rocks. In the calmer months, March through September, small blacktip reef sharks sometimes cruise the outer edges of the cove.

Gear Rental and Tips

The Crystal Bay Beach Club rents snorkel sets — mask, snorkel, fins — for around 200 THB a half day. Conditions are best in the morning, 8:00 to 11:00, before the breeze picks up. Wear reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard so you protect yourself without harming the coral.

Where to Eat

Crystal Bay Beach Club

The main table on the beach is the Crystal Bay Beach Club, the social hub of the bay. The menu runs Thai and international with a lean toward fresh seafood. The seafood platter for two, at 2,200 THB, is the headline order. Individual mains run 200 to 600 THB for Thai dishes and 350 to 800 THB for Western.

It is open to everyone, not just hotel guests. Walk in, take a table, order off the menu. No reservation for lunch, but booking ahead for dinner on fire-show nights — Tuesday and Friday — is a good idea.

Cocktails run 250 to 400 THB, with happy-hour specials bringing selected drinks to 180 THB. Fresh coconuts are 80 THB, smoothies 120 to 150 THB.

Nearby Restaurants

Within a 5 to 10 minute drive, the main road between Chaweng and Lamai is lined with Thai restaurants where you eat well for 100 to 250 THB a dish. For a special night out, Lamai to the south has a growing set of upscale Thai and fusion spots.

Where to Stay

Silver Beach has two beachfront properties, both under the Crystal Bay name. They are the only accommodations with direct access to the sand, which is part of why the beach stays as calm as it does.

Crystal Bay Beach Resort

The Beach Resort is the smaller of the two — 25 rooms, from budget-friendly Superior rooms to the beachfront Grand Seaview Suite. It sits right on the sand, the closest rooms a few steps from the water. Superior rooms start from 2,750 THB per night, Seaview from 3,150 THB, Beachfront Deluxe from 4,100 THB, and the Grand Seaview Suite from 4,750 THB. On the value: guests tend to make the case better than a price tag can — "The all inclusive breakfasts nearly paid for the room itself." — Agoda guest, October 2023. Book direct and you pay the same rate as Booking.com and Agoda, with a free airport transfer and a Beach Club credit added on.

Crystal Bay Yacht Club

The Yacht Club is the larger sister property — 43 bungalows across 14,000 square meters of tropical garden. Prices start from 2,050 THB per night for a garden villa. Pool villas run from 6,100 THB, a private 33 square meter bungalow with your own plunge pool. It has its own swimming pool, which suits guests who want to switch between beach and pool through the day.

Activities and Things to Do

The beach is the main event, but there is more here than a sun lounger.

Snorkeling

Snorkeling the granite boulders is the most popular thing to do beyond swimming and sunbathing. Gear rental at the Beach Club is around 200 THB a half day.

Kayaking

Kayaks rent at the Beach Club — a single around 300 THB per hour, a double 500 THB. Paddling the headlands on a calm day gets you to small coves you cannot reach on foot.

Fire Shows

The Beach Club runs fire shows on Tuesday and Friday evenings — skilled fire dancers on the beach after dark. Free to watch for resort guests and Beach Club visitors.

Live Music and DJ Sessions

Saturday nights bring DJ sessions to the Beach Club — chill house and tropical beats at a comfortable volume, made for dancing barefoot on the sand.

Day Trips

Silver Beach makes a good base for the rest of the island. Easy runs: the Big Buddha temple (30 minutes north), the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks at Lamai (10 minutes south), the Namuang Waterfalls (30 minutes inland), and boat trips to Ang Thong National Marine Park.

Safety and Practical Tips

Swimming Safety

Silver Beach is one of the safest swimming beaches on Koh Samui. The cove blocks strong currents and the sandy bottom slopes gently, no sudden drop-offs. Near the boulders there are submerged rocks, so wear water shoes if you plan to explore close to the edges.

Sun Protection

The sun here is stronger than most visitors are used to at home. Apply sunscreen generously and reapply after swimming. Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect yourself and the marine life.

Cash vs Card

The Crystal Bay resorts and Beach Club take major credit cards. Smaller vendors and songthaews prefer cash. The nearest ATMs are on the main road between Chaweng and Lamai, about 5 minutes away.

What to Bring

For a day trip: reef-safe sunscreen, a towel (or rent one at the Beach Club), water shoes for the rocky areas, your own mask if you have one, a waterproof phone case, cash and a card, and a light cover-up for the walk to and from the main road.
