USM is unlike most airports you will have flown into. There is no single enclosed terminal, just a series of open-air pavilions with tropical gardens between them, run by Bangkok Airways. It is small enough that you will clear immigration, collect your bag, and be outside in well under an hour on a normal day. The airport sits in the north-east of the island, closer to Chaweng and Bophut than to the southern coast, which matters once you start working out transfer times.

Every option from the airport is a private one. There is no public bus service on Koh Samui, so your choices come down to:

  • The official taxi counter just outside arrivals, with fixed zone prices displayed on a board. Expect somewhere in the region of 400-800 THB depending on how far you are going, since prices vary by zone and can drift with fuel costs.

Why Grab does not solve this at the airport

Grab works well across most of Koh Samui, but it cannot pick up passengers inside the airport itself. How long is the drive to the south-east coast

Because USM sits in the north-east, journey times depend heavily on where you are staying. A run up to Chaweng or Bophut can be quick, sometimes not much more than 20 minutes. Heading down to the Lamai area and beyond, including Silver Beach, is a longer drive, and realistically you should budget somewhere around 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, roadworks, and the time of day you land. The open-air layout of USM means the wait rarely feels like sitting in a typical terminal, and once you are through to your hotel area there is no shortage of places to eat before you have even unpacked.
