Chaweng and Lamai get the photos, the beach clubs and the crowds. If you are after quiet beaches on Koh Samui, the island still has a handful of stretches where you can hear the water instead of a jet ski, and none of them require a boat trip to a neighbouring island.
Why the Busy Beaches Aren't the Only Option
Samui's east coast, Chaweng and Lamai in particular, is where most hotel beds sit, so that is where most people end up. The west and north coasts, and a few overlooked corners of the east side, see a fraction of the footfall. None of the beaches below are secret. They are simply less convenient to the main strip, which is exactly why they stay calm.
Lipa Noi: A Long West-Coast Curve
Lipa Noi runs for roughly three kilometres along the middle of the west coast, a short drive from the Raja Ferry pier that links Samui to the mainland. The water is shallow and calm, the sand is fine, and because there is little in the way of beach-facing development, you can walk long stretches without passing another sunbather. It faces west, so it is the one on this list built for sunset rather than sunrise, with the sun dropping behind the hills of the mainland across the Gulf. Traffic picks up right at the ferry pier itself, but move a kilometre either side and it thins out fast.
Taling Ngam: Views Toward Ang Thong
Further south on the west coast, Taling Ngam is quieter still, and around 45 minutes by road from Chaweng, which keeps day-trippers away. It is a narrow beach rather than a wide one, but the payoff is the view: on a clear day you can see the islands of Ang Thong National Marine Park sitting out in the Gulf. This is a beach for a slow afternoon with a book, not for water sports or nightlife, and it stays that way because there is very little to draw a crowd.
Thongson Bay: The Quiet Northern Corner
At the island's northern tip, near Plai Laem, Thongson Bay is a small, sheltered inlet with views across the water toward Koh Phangan. It has a residential, low-key feel rather than a resort strip, and because it sits off the main ring road, it rarely appears on a standard day-trip itinerary. Bring your own shade and water. There is not much in the way of beachfront service here, which is precisely the point.
Chaweng Noi: Quiet, But Close to Everything
If you want quiet without giving up convenience, Chaweng Noi is the pragmatic choice. It is a separate cove just south of main Chaweng, split off by a headland, and that small piece of geography does a lot of work: the crowds stay on the main beach and Chaweng Noi keeps a calmer, more low-rise atmosphere while still being a short walk or five-minute taxi from Chaweng's restaurants and bars.
Silver Beach's Early-Morning Window
Silver Beach, also known as Thong Takian, sits between Lamai and Chaweng on the south-east coast and faces east across the Gulf, which makes it a sunrise beach rather than a sunset one. We have covered the beach in full in our complete guide to Silver Beach, so we will not repeat it here, but it is worth flagging on a quiet-beaches list for one reason: the first couple of hours after sunrise. Before the day-trip boats and the mid-morning crowd arrive, the cove is close to empty, the water is flat calm, and the light is the best of the day for the snorkelling just off the sand. It is not a hidden spot, but it has a genuinely quiet window if you time it right. If you are coming from elsewhere on the island, our guide to getting to Silver Beach covers the routes.
Getting to Any of These
- A rental scooter or a car gives you the most flexibility for the west-coast beaches, since they are spread out and public transport along that side is thin.
- Taxis and songthaews cover the east coast well, including the short hop out to Chaweng Noi.
- If you are flying in, remember that Grab cannot pick you up from inside Koh Samui airport. Use the airport taxi counter or arrange a hotel transfer instead.
Which One Suits You
Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam suit anyone staying on or renting on the west coast, or making a deliberate day of it. Thongson Bay suits a quiet detour on the way to or from the northern tip. Chaweng Noi suits anyone who wants calm mornings without sacrificing Chaweng's restaurants at night. And Silver Beach suits anyone already staying near Lamai or Chaweng who is willing to set an early alarm.
We are on Silver Beach itself, so if an early, quiet swim before breakfast sounds like your kind of morning, it is worth checking our own room availability directly. You can read what past guests thought in our honest review of Crystal Bay Beach Resort, and when you are ready, book direct with us for the same rate as the OTAs, plus a free cancellation window of 7 days before arrival.
