Planning a first trip and searching for a proper koh samui travel guide rather than a listicle? Here is the honest version: what it actually costs to get here, how to get around once you land, where to base yourself, and when to go. We run two beachfront properties on the island's south-east coast, so we will be upfront about where our interest lies, but most of what follows applies whichever part of Samui you end up choosing.

Koh Samui Travel Guide: Getting to the Island

Most visitors fly directly into Samui International Airport (USM), a short hop from Bangkok, Phuket, or Kuala Lumpur depending on your route. It is a small, open-air airport, which is part of its charm and part of why queues can build up fast during peak arrival windows.

The budget alternative is flying into Surat Thani on the mainland and connecting by ferry, usually via Donsak pier. It takes longer, door to door, but can save a meaningful amount on the flight itself, especially if you are booking last minute.

If you are island-hopping, catamaran operators like Lomprayah and Seatran Discovery connect Samui to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, though they leave from different piers. Lomprayah departs from Maenam Pier on the north coast, while Seatran Discovery runs from Bangrak (Big Buddha) Pier; Nathon on the west coast handles most mainland ferry traffic. Crossing to Koh Phangan is quick, often well under an hour on the fast boats; Koh Tao takes longer, roughly a couple of hours depending on the operator and conditions.

Getting Around Once You Land

This is the part every koh samui travel guide should be honest about: there is no metered taxi system here. Drivers negotiate a fare before you get in, and prices between beach areas can vary a lot depending on distance and time of day. Agree the number before the car moves, not after.

One detail worth knowing before you arrive: Grab cannot pick passengers up from inside the airport itself. Drivers will meet you at a designated spot just outside arrivals if you book ahead, but do not expect a car to roll up to the terminal doors. Many travellers just arrange a pre-booked transfer or hotel pickup for the first leg and sort out Grab or a scooter once they are settled.

  • Songthaews — the red shared pickup trucks that loop the main ring road. Flag one down, agree a rough fare, ring the bell to stop. Cheap and slow, and the classic Samui way to get between beaches.
  • Scooter rental — flexible if you are comfortable on two wheels. Roads are hilly in places and driving is on the left; licence and insurance requirements vary by nationality and rental shop, so check what applies to you before you sign anything. Wear the helmet they hand you, and know that scooter accidents are the most common way tourists get hurt here.
  • Grab or a private driver — fixed price shown before you book, useful for anything after dark or with luggage.

Where to Stay

Samui is bigger than its Instagram feed suggests, and where you base yourself changes the trip. Chaweng is the main strip for nightlife and shopping. Lamai is quieter and more local. Bophut's Fisherman's Village leans boutique and walkable.

Our own stretch of coast sits on the south-east side, on the cove locally and internationally known as Silver Beach, or Thong Takian, tucked between Lamai and Chaweng. We have written a full breakdown of that beach and why the naming gets confusing if you want the detail: our Silver Beach complete guide covers it properly. If you are weighing it against the island's other well-known stretches of sand, we also compare it honestly in our Koh Samui beaches guide.

On that cove, Crystal Bay Beach Resort is a 25-room beachfront hotel geared toward couples and shorter stays, while Crystal Bay Yacht Club is 45 villas, terraces and suites, better suited to families or anyone staying longer. For the specifics on reaching this particular beach, see our guide to getting to Silver Beach. For what a stay actually looks like at either property, we have honest write-ups of both: Crystal Bay Beach Resort review and Crystal Bay Yacht Club review.

When to Go

Samui's weather pattern runs opposite to much of Thailand's west coast. The driest, sunniest stretch generally falls from roughly December through March. Shoulder months either side are still workable with a bit more rain. The wettest period tends to land around October and November, when short, heavy downpours are common but rarely last all day. There is no single "festival date" worth planning a whole trip around unless you are chasing something specific like a full moon event, and even then it is worth checking the current calendar rather than trusting an old blog post, ours included.

What Actually Fills the Days

Beyond lying on sand, the island's real draws are the viewpoints (Secret Buddha Garden and the various coastal lookouts), the Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem temples near Bangrak, waterfalls inland, and a genuinely good food scene that runs from beach shacks to proper seafood restaurants. If seafood is a priority, we have a full guide to Thai seafood on Silver Beach. If snorkelling matters to you, the granite-boulder coves on the south-east coast, Silver Beach included, offer decent reef life straight off the sand without needing a boat trip.

Evenings on our stretch of coast center on the sand itself. Crystal Bay Beach Club runs a fire show on the beach every Tuesday and Friday night, no service charge, kitchen open into the evening.

A Few Honest Practicalities

Cash still matters here, especially for songthaews and smaller vendors, though cards are increasingly accepted at hotels and larger restaurants. A local SIM or eSIM at the airport will save you from patchy hotel wifi. Longer stays involve visa rules that change often enough that we will not attempt specifics in a general guide, check the current requirements for your passport before you book.

If you do land on our side of the island, book directly with us at Crystal Bay Beach Resort or Crystal Bay Yacht Club and you get the same rate you would find on the big booking platforms, without the middleman. Our cancellation policy is 7 days before arrival, worth knowing whichever property you end up choosing.
